Jackson State University pursues top research status
The project uses tiny sensors, buoys and artificial intelligence to track oyster health as JSU builds its research profile.
- On Thursday, Aug. 6, Jackson State University researchers demonstrated a marine project using artificial intelligence and underwater sensors to monitor oyster health on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The initiative, part of the Mississippi Based RESTORE Act Center of Excellence, or MBRACE, is one of roughly 400 research projects at the university.
- Oyster reefs historically supported a $100 million industry, but environmental threats like hurricanes, disease and pollution frequently compromise these habitats. Professor Kamal Ali noted the project aims to protect regional revenue and ecological stability by providing real-time data.
- Expanding such research supports Jackson State University's ambition to join the nation's highest tier of research institutions. The work operates under EMBRACE, funded with a $26 million, 15-year grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, partnering JSU with Mississippi State, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Southern Mississippi.
- Gaining top-tier Carnegie Classification requires spending at least $50 million annually on research and development and awarding 70 research doctorates. Jackson State University currently spends nearly $19.5 million and awards nearly 68 doctorates annually, according to Provost Preselfannie McDaniels.
- In April, Jackson State University joined 14 other historically Black colleges and universities to launch the Association of HBCU Research Institutions. Supported by Harvard University, this coalition aims to help member institutions compete for larger federal grants and expand research capacity.
