New St. Jude CEO Dr. Charles Roberts says childhood cancer treatments are at ‘the dawn of a new era’
Roberts will keep no-cost treatment and expand services worldwide as St. Jude’s cancer center leader takes over after an international search.
- St. Jude Children's Research Hospital named Dr. Charles W.M. Roberts its new president and CEO on Tuesday, effective January 1, 2027, succeeding Dr. James R. Downing after his 12-year tenure.
- Roberts currently serves as executive vice president and director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he led the institution to its highest National Cancer Institute ranking with an 'Exceptional' score.
- Childhood cancer survival rates have climbed from around 20% to more than 80% since the hospital opened more than 60 years ago. Roberts calls this shift 'the dawn of a new era' in pediatric medicine.
- The hospital will maintain its no-cost treatment policy for all families. St. Jude funds this mission through ALSAC, which raised an average of $2.3 billion annually between 2021 and 2023.
- Roberts plans to expand global services to reach more children with catastrophic diseases worldwide. Downing transitions to a faculty role in the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine, completing the leadership succession.
