Watchdog clears B.C. Mounties after man suffers self-inflicted gunshot wound
The watchdog said video, audio, medical records and witness accounts showed no connection between police actions and the man’s injuries.
On Tuesday, the Independent Investigations Office cleared the RCMP of wrongdoing in a Quesnel incident where a man suffered self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Mounties responded to reports of gunshots and an armed man at a Nason Street residence on April 15, 2026, establishing containment and instructing nearby residents to shelter.
Investigators reviewed evidence including body-worn camera footage, audio recordings, and medical records, determining no connection between police actions and the man's self-inflicted injuries.
The man was transported to the hospital for treatment following his discovery at the residence, and the IIO has now concluded its investigation.
As British Columbia's independent civilian oversight agency, the IIO investigates all officer-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, regardless of alleged wrongdoing.
