Victoria rescue centre sends helicopter to pluck patient from cruise ship north of Tofino

The Kingfisher coordinated the airlift as rescue technicians lowered to the deck and hoisted the patient to a helicopter.

  • On Sunday, Aug. 9, The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria conducted a medical evacuation of an ill passenger from the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Ovation of the Seas in the Salish Sea.
  • Located 52 nautical miles northwest of Tofino, the mission utilized a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher airplane to reach the vessel.
  • The Kingfisher arrived first to coordinate the mission and provide over-watch, while search and rescue technicians from The Cormorant were lowered to the deck to prepare the patient for transfer.
  • Following the successful hoist, the patient and technicians were transported to a hospital in Greater Victoria for medical care.
  • Maintaining 24-hour readiness, these aircraft serve as the primary response team for the Victoria Search and Rescue region, supporting vessels like the Ovation that carry nearly 5,000 passengers.
