Argentina economic activity rises 2.7% in June, above expectations
Fishing, mining and agriculture drove the gain, with 12 of 15 sectors posting year-over-year increases, government data showed.
- On Thursday, Argentina's national statistics agency INDEC reported economic activity expanded 0.8 percent from May, surpassing the 0.3 percent median estimate, with year-on-year growth hitting 2.7 percent.
- Growth was driven primarily by mining, quarrying, and fishing, with 12 of the 15 sectors tracked by the EMAE posting year-on-year gains; public administration, electricity, and education sectors declined.
- Despite the momentum, inflation remains a challenge for President Javier Milei's government, with consumer prices rising 2.1 percent in July and the Central Bank forecasting a 29.8 percent inflation rate for 2026.
- To "reactivate the economy," Economy Minister Luis Caputo scrapped a 2001 restriction, allowing dollar lending to all companies instead of just those generating dollar revenues.
- Milei's government has sharply cut public spending to curb inflation while seeking to revive growth in the industrial, consumer, and construction sectors to sustain momentum.
