Andhra Pradesh Cabinet Paves Way for Inclusive Local Elections with BC Reservations
The state also ordered direct elections for key urban posts and warned local bodies could lose ₹12,150 crore if polls slip past October.
The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved 34% reservation for Backward Classes in local body polls on Tuesday, with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announcing the decision during a meeting at the Secretariat in Amaravati.
Chief Minister Naidu cautioned that local bodies could lose ₹12,150 crore if the election process is not completed by October, prompting the Cabinet to expedite polls and enable the State to access funds from the Centre.
Direct elections for Mayors and chairpersons of local bodies will now occur, the Cabinet decided, while reorganising 13 Zilla Praja Parishads into new Zilla Parishads and maintaining existing Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes reservations.
Naidu directed Ministers to ensure legal compliance while preparing for the polls and instructed officials to delay the proposed merger of 23 municipalities facing legal issues until after the elections conclude.
Local body elections are likely to be held later this year, as Naidu instructed the committee to regulate liquor brand names and asked Ministers to address negative comments on social media effectively.
