Venom Frontman Cronos Dead at 63
The frontman helped shape black metal over four decades, and Venom said no cause of death was given.
- On Tuesday, Venom singer and bassist Conrad 'Cronos' Lant died at age 63, his band confirmed in a statement. The iconic co-founder shaped extreme metal over more than four decades.
- Lant helped co-found Venom in England in 1978, launching the band that would release 16 studio albums including 'Welcome To Hell' and 'Black Metal' , which essentially kickstarted the black metal genre.
- 'For more than four decades, Conrad's voice, bass and vision were at the heart of Venom,' the band stated. His son Nathan added, 'I want to thank all of the Legions for all of the support you have given my dad over the years.'
- Venom released its sixteenth studio album 'Into Oblivion' in May 2026, marking the band's first new recordings since 2018. The band emphasized that Lant's music and legacy will endure through the 'Legions' worldwide.
- Prior to his death, Lant was involved in a June 2024 legal dispute over merchandise designs with former bandmate Anthony 'Abaddon' Bray. Meanwhile, co-founders Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn and Bray announced plans to celebrate 'Welcome To Hell''s 45th anniversary at festivals in 2026.
