Ukraine Urges FIA to Reverse Its U-Turn over Russian Competitors in Motorsport
Ukraine’s motorsport federation says the FIA move came as a complete surprise and argues the change follows wider Olympic and federation shifts.
Ukraine's Minister of Youth and Sports has written to International Automobile Federation president Mohammed Ben Sulayem requesting the governing body reconsider lifting the ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors.
Last week, the FIA lifted the ban on participants from the two countries competing with their own flags and anthems following a World Motor Sport Council vote to update driver and official requirements.
This policy shift follows the International Olympic Committee announcement on July 7th regarding the Russian Olympic Committee, aiming to bring Russia closer to reintegration ahead of the Los Angeles Games.
Ukraine's Automobile Federation said the move had "come as a complete surprise," while Russian Automobile Federation President Boris Rotenberg stated sport "should be out of politics."
Despite easing driver restrictions, the FIA maintains its ban on organizing events in Russia and Belarus while reserving the right to update its position as it continues monitoring the situation.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) last week lifted a ban that allowed Russian and Belarusian drivers to once again compete under their national flags and anthems, but Ukraine is calling on the organization to reconsider the decision.
