Nicola Sturgeon feels like a ‘mug’ over Murrell and won’t visit him in prison
Sturgeon said Murrell lied to her until his guilty plea and said she will not visit him in prison, calling the betrayal hard to process.
Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told an Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience on Saturday that her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, lied to her "right up till the day he pled guilty."
Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, was jailed in June for five years after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from the party between 2010 and 2022, spending funds on luxury items.
Sturgeon revealed she "feels like a mug" for caring about Murrell before his plea, confirming she refuses to visit him in prison or speak to him after the betrayal.
She claimed she was not informed Murrell had been negotiating a guilty plea with the Crown Office since March 3 until one week before his High Court appearance, which "hit me like a tonne of bricks."
Sturgeon argued she faces unfair gendered scrutiny over Murrell's crimes, asserting that if she were a male first minister, focus would be on how he could not have known his wife's actions.
