John Swinney defends £45,000 business-class flights to World Cup
The trips included business-class flights for John Swinney and two aides, while the government said they supported trade talks and the national team.
The Scottish government spent £98,442 on trips for First Minister John Swinney, Sports Minister Maree Todd, and officials to the US, combining World Cup support with trade, tourism, culture, and investment talks.
Swinney defended using more than £45,000 of public funds on business-class flights for himself and aides, though government rules restrict business class to flights over 10 hours "unless otherwise agreed."
While Todd and other officials traveled on economy-class flights to Miami costing £5,485, the government spent £11,800 on economy flights for other staff and more than £10,000 on car hire for the First Minister's visit.
Justice Secretary Neil Gray defended the spending to ensure ministers "arrive fresh," while Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr argued "costs were never kept under control" by the SNP government.
Gray claimed the trips increased Scotland's "soft-power reach and the ability to make significant international connections," asserting it was right for the First Minister and his team to participate in the World Cup.
