Nicola Sturgeon calls for politicians to have ‘courage’ on environmental issues
Sturgeon says new North Sea wells should stay closed as Labour weighs Rosebank and Jackdaw, warning Scotland must not regress on climate policy.
During an appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Nicola Sturgeon called for "courage" on climate policy, stating she opposes new North Sea drilling as the Labour Government considers opening the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields.
Consultations on both projects have closed following fierce environmental opposition, with Sturgeon pointing to summer wildfires as evidence that "the climate crisis is here and it's present."
While acknowledging that a "large number of workers" in Aberdeen depend on the energy industry, Sturgeon argued for transitioning them into clean industry, calling oil and gas a "declining asset."
SNP MSP for Aberdeen Central Jack Middleton countered that the Rosebank and Jackdaw projects should proceed for economic benefits, as Sturgeon's stance puts her "at odds with some people" in her own party.
Recalling her 2019 pledge after "declaring that there is a climate emergency," Sturgeon emphasized that Scotland must live up to its responsibility to tackle the crisis despite short-term unpopularity.
