The Brazilian Amazon metropolis of Manaus is enveloped by dense smoke due to numerous fires in the region. Semsa, the municipal health authority, rated air quality as very poor and advised to reduce outdoor activities and to wear an appropriate mask in case of unavoidable exposure. High temperatures, low humidity and atmospheric conditions, according to the authorities, favour the accumulation of pollutant particles.
