South Korea Says Russian Military Planes Entered Its Air Defence Zone

South Korea said the aircraft left without entering sovereign airspace after the military detected them early and scrambled fighter jets.

  • On Tuesday, South Korean Air Force fighter jets scrambled after several Russian military aircraft briefly entered the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone near Dokdo and Ulleung Island. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said "the aircraft did not violate Korea's airspace."
  • KADIZ serves as a security buffer zone where foreign aircraft are asked to identify themselves, though it is not sovereign airspace. While there is no legal obligation to notify South Korea before entering, military aircraft are generally expected to do so.
  • In late June, nearly 10 Chinese and Russian aircraft entered the KADIZ. Beijing's defense ministry called it a "strategic air patrol" over the East China Sea, while Russia's defense ministry said it was "not directed against third countries."
  • Following the unauthorized entry, the South Korean defense ministry lodged strong protests with Beijing and Moscow. Officials demanded that both governments take measures to prevent any future recurrence of such incursions.
  • Since South Korea joined Western sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, bilateral relations have worsened. Tensions have escalated as Moscow built stronger military ties with North Korea, complicating regional security dynamics.
