Sanitation worker dies after falling from truck on first day on job
John Derrick Dover died after falling from the rear platform of a garbage truck on his first day, and his father was driving, officials said.
On Monday, 32-year-old John Derrick Dover died after falling from a sanitation truck in Cherokee County, South Carolina, on his first day of work.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler reported that Dover fell while the truck turned from Bonner Road onto Hayes Road, with Dover riding the rear platform alongside one other worker.
Dover was pronounced dead at 3:26 p.m. at Spartanburg Medical Center; the circumstances proved particularly tragic because his father was driving the garbage truck at the time.
Cherokee County officials expressed deep sadness Tuesday, stating, "Our hearts and prayers are with this family," while emphasizing the county's commitment to gathering accurate information.
An autopsy will be performed as part of the coroner's ongoing investigation, with the county pledging to provide updates as confirmed information becomes available.
