When Bernard was 17 (1107), his mother died. He then turned to Mary to replace his earthly mother. This would be one of the defining characteristics of his spirit: a tender devotion to the Mother of God. At 22, he entered the austere Cistercian abbey at Cîteaux, bringing with him thirty companions of his youth. Shortly thereafter, his father also entered the abbey.
