Reform says it will send foreign criminals to El Salvador
The party says the plan could cut costs and ease overcrowding as UK prisons near full capacity and El Salvador’s CECOT holds up to 40,000 inmates.
- On Monday, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced talks with President Nayib Bukele's government to rent space in El Salvador's maximum-security facility for over 10,000 foreign inmates currently held in British prisons.
- Facing a capacity crisis, the British prison system operated at 99% capacity early this year, prompting Reform UK to pledge 12,000 new spaces through temporary 'Nightingale Prisons' to ease overcrowding.
- Formally called the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo , the maximum-security prison in Tecoluca has a capacity of 40,000 inmates, housing between 15,000 and 20,000 detainees at its peak, according to prison director Belarmino Garcia.
- Critics and charities warned that deporting detainees risks exposing them to torture, while a Labour Party spokesperson dismissed the proposal, stating "Keeping the public safe is and always will be Labour's first priority."
- Reform UK chairman Lee Anderson will lead a delegation to El Salvador within months to finalize arrangements, as Ecuador and Costa Rica are also constructing CECOT-style maximum-security facilities following the model's regional success.
