Iowa Expands Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program to 28 Counties Total
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said the expansion will help more farmers use row crops to support cattle and reduce erosion.
- On Tuesday, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced the expansion of the Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program into 22 counties within the Greater Des Moines watershed.
- Originally established in 2016, the initiative has helped convert more than 16,000 acres of less-productive cropland into pasture, reducing soil erosion and limiting fertilizer runoff to rivers.
- The Department of Agriculture is offering $1.5 million over five years to support the transition, while adding two program coordinators to facilitate "outreach and engagement" for cattle producers.
- Bryan Waley, CEO of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, praised the expansion, stating "Cattlemen have been stewards of the land for generations" and emphasizing viability for future operations.
- Naig hopes the program's success can serve as a "model" for reforming the federal conservation reserve program, or CRP, describing the effort as a "win-win" balancing productivity with environmental protection.
