Dominican authorities help foreign tourists affected by a massive resort fire return home
Authorities said nearly 1,700 tourists were evacuated and embassies are helping replace lost passports after the blaze.
On Saturday, Dominican authorities worked to repatriate foreign tourists following a massive fire that destroyed the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham hotel in Bayahibe.
The hotel operated at 84% occupancy when the blaze began; the Emergency Operations Center said the "fire spread rapidly" due to wind and because part of the hotel's roof was made of thatch.
Nearly 1,700 guests were evacuated, and General Manuel, director of the Emergency Operations Center, said authorities are investigating the death of an Italian national.
Displaced tourists were relocated to hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe, while hotel executive Amanda Santana said they are coordinating with embassies to replace lost identity documents.
Hotel management officials are working with police to expedite report filings for guests, and authorities confirmed that tourism activities in the area are continuing as normal.
