The European Commission has sharply criticized the elections in Russia that began on Friday. The manner in which they are being held "underscores the ongoing and increasing erosion of democracy in Russia," a Commission spokesperson said on Friday. The Commission also condemns the "illegal organization of so-called elections by the Russian Federation in the occupied territories of Ukraine."

Brussels accuses the Russian authorities of excluding any democratic opposition from the general election. According to one spokesman, the organisation of these elections bears witness to a "continuous and growing erosion of democracy" in the country.
The European Commission today considered that Russia has increased repression to exclude opposition forces from competing in elections for the Russian parliament, considering that they are carried out against democracy.
