Kuki MLAs Attend Manipur Assembly Session for First Time Since Ethnic Strife Eruption
The lawmakers attended in person for the first time since the 2023 violence, defying a community directive after more than 260 deaths.
- On Wednesday, Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen attended the Manipur Legislative Assembly in Imphal, marking the first in-person appearance by Kuki MLAs since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.
- While six Kuki-Zo MLAs participated in the Budget session virtually in February, this physical arrival represents a shift for the nine Kuki, Zomi and Hmar MLAs serving in the House.
- Ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and Kukis has killed more than 260 people since May 2023, leaving thousands homeless and deepening divisions across the state.
- Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex community body, had directed all legislators to avoid traveling to Meitei-majority Imphal pending a political settlement on Kuki-Zo demands for a separate administration.
- Both representatives, Hangshing and Kipgen, represent constituencies in Kangpokpi district, signaling a potential shift in the Kuki and Zomi delegation's approach to legislative participation despite community pressure.
