Jason Arday: Fundraiser launched to cover academic's funeral costs
The GoFundMe campaign has drawn more than 1,100 donations and will help cover funeral and family costs.
- Windrush campaigner Sir Patrick Vernon launched a GoFundMe on Saturday to cover funeral and memorial costs for former Cambridge University professor Jason Arday, raising more than £30,000 from over 1,100 donations by Sunday morning.
- Emergency services found Prof Arday unresponsive at a Battersea property on Friday, days after he resigned from his sociology of education post following allegations of plagiarism made against him.
- His family stated Arday faced a "campaign of sustained abuse" for more than three years, while Cambridge colleague Sir Simon Baron-Cohen told the BBC he "couldn't go on" amid relentless scrutiny and loss of reputation.
- During a visit to Cornwall on Saturday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the professor's death as a "tragedy on so many levels" and called for a "moment of reflection."
- Stand Up To Racism plans a memorial vigil at the National Gallery on Monday at 6pm, while group co-convenor Weyman Bennett alleged the death resulted from a "racist witch hunt" by right-wing press and politicians.
