Bronze maple leaf taken from monument honouring slain New Brunswick RCMP officers
Police say the missing leaf is one of 12 on a memorial honoring three officers, and they are asking the public for tips.
Codiac Regional RCMP launched an investigation after a bronze maple leaf was stolen from a Moncton memorial commemorating three RCMP officers killed in a 2014 shooting.
Erected in 2016 at The Honour Garden along Assomption Boulevard, the memorial features life-size statues of Constables Doug Larche, Dave Ross, and Fabrice Gevaudan, who were killed by Justin Bourque in June 2014.
The monument originally displayed a dozen bronze leaves, each featuring fingerprints from more than 1,500 people, including families and first responders; it appears the thief cut or pried the missing piece from the concrete base.
Police believe the theft occurred between August 7 and August 12, treating the incident as vandalism; they are asking anyone with information to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
Jonathan White stated the memorial holds "tremendous significance" to the community; Nadine Larche, who discovered the missing leaf, said she was "angered, disgusted, discouraged" by the destruction of the site.
