‘Grateful and Blessed’: Island Driver Claims Third Straight Win at B.C. Race
Bill Okell overcame an early drop to seventh and finished three seconds ahead of Geoff Tupholme in the 15-minute MG Midget race.
On August 9, Victoria driver Bill Okell won the MG Midget race at Mission Raceway Park for the third consecutive year, with the British Columbia Historic Motor Races drawing 103 entries.
After qualifying third for the 15-minute race, Okell dropped to seventh place early but worked through the field to cross the finish line three seconds ahead of Kamloops driver Geoff Tupholme.
Using a Mans-style start, Okell struggled initially but told himself, "Well, Bill, I've been here before," then methodically passed competitors one by one to take the lead midway.
At 71, Okell has five decades of auto racing experience and remains grateful competing against drivers a third of his age, saying, "Im grateful and blessed that I have this opportunity for me to be doing this at age 71."
Okell will return to the all-MG Midget series at the Columbia River Classic at Portland International Raceway over Labour Day weekend, following his fifth-place finish in the North American standings this season.
