Gamecocks hope overhauled offensive line allows Heisman Trophy hopeful QB LaNorris Sellers to shine
South Carolina added nine transfer-portal linemen and expects four new starters as it seeks to cut down on the 42 sacks allowed last season.
South Carolina overhauled its offensive line by adding nine transfers on Thursday to protect Heisman Trophy hopeful quarterback LaNorris Sellers entering the 2026 season.
Sellers suffered 42 sacks last season—the most in the SEC—while the team finished 4-8, prompting the Gamecocks to seek better protection for their dual-threat quarterback.
Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles installed a modified "veer-and-shoot" system designed to take advantage of Sellers' running ability. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said, "We'd be remiss, in my opinion, if we don't utilize what makes LaNorris Sellers great."
With Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson sidelined by season-ending injuries and Vandrevius Jacobs transferring to Miami, receivers Mazeo Bennett and Nitro Tuggle are expected to see increased targets.
Defensively, the Gamecocks retained 250-pound edge rusher Dylan Stewart, who has recorded 11 sacks in two seasons. The team faces major tests against Alabama, Texas A&M, and Georgia this fall.
