Kansas Football Coach Lance Leipold Weighs Prospect of Pros Returning to College Game
A Louisiana judge’s order could let 16 players, including Anthony Hankerson, leave NFL contracts and enter the transfer portal.
On Wednesday, a federal judge in Louisiana granted a temporary restraining order allowing 16 former players, including Seattle Seahawks running back Anthony Hankerson, to enter the transfer portal and pursue college football.
The lawsuit challenges NCAA eligibility rules that previously prohibited athletes from returning to college after signing professional contracts, arguing five-year eligibility windows should extend to those who exhausted four seasons.
Running back Hankerson posted 232 carries for 1,082 yards and 15 touchdowns at Oregon State in 2024, while fellow plaintiff T.J. Harden entered the transfer portal after being waived by the Seahawks.
Players must secure release from their NFL contracts by September 1 to utilize this legal relief, which provides a pathway to return to the college gridiron if programs accept them.
Kansas football coach Lance Leipold is monitoring the situation, noting the ruling arrives before the August 30 deadline for NFL teams to finalize their 53-man rosters, creating unprecedented roster decisions.
