FC Groningen defeated FC Utrecht 2-1 at their home stadium, the Euroborg. Dick Lukkien's team owed the victory to goals from Icelander Brynjólfur Willumsson and Thom van Bergen. Adrian Blake scored for FC Utrecht.

FC Groningen has started the new season excellently. FC Utrecht wants to become the fittest team in the Eredivisie, but the Utrechters could not match Thom van Bergen and his teammates. Led by the outstanding striker, along with Thijmen Blokzijl, Jorg Schreuders, and Etienne Vaessen, Groningen won 2-1.

FC Groningen started the new Eredivisie season with a victory on Sunday. The northerners beat FC Utrecht 2-1, giving coach Anthony Correia a false start.
