The first problem caused by Edgecomb being down a selectman occurred Aug. 18 as the board canceled its meeting for lack of a quorum. Selectman Cara Gaffney was present, but Chairman Forrest Carver was not. George Chase resigned July 21, leaving the board with only two members. A special election was scheduled for Nov. 3 to fill the vacancy.
