Carers have just days left to act as DWP plans major benefits rules shake-up
The review considers an earnings taper and work-hour changes after reassessments of about 200,000 cases uncovered debt issues.
The Government is conducting a major review of Carer's Allowance, with the consultation closing on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to modernize benefits unchanged for 50 years.
Current earnings rules create a "cliff edge," where carers risk losing benefits if income exceeds £204, prompting the DWP's reassessment of around 200,000 cases to address debt from unclear guidance.
Officials are considering an earnings taper to soften the abrupt cut-off, alongside proposals to improve rule predictability for those with fluctuating income and examining policies regarding permitted working hours.
Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms called unpaid carers the "backbone of our communities," urging the public to provide input to help shape the next stage of reform.
Carers Trust supports the move, noting that employment and caring have changed dramatically, while around 25,000 cases are expected to have debts reduced or cancelled through new capital disregard rules.
