The one-hour psychological horror thriller follows a documentary filmmaker drawn into a mysterious cult and marks Balfe’s return to television after Outlander.
- Apple TV ordered the psychological horror thriller 'Ascension' on Tuesday, starring 'Outlander' actress Caitríona Balfe. Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón will write and executive produce the series.
- Inspired by Adam Nevill's novel 'Last Days', the series follows Rose, a recently divorced documentary filmmaker investigating the Church of Ascension, a mysterious 20th-century cult. As she explores its teachings, she discovers dangerous secrets beneath.
- Co-Showrunners Natalie Erika James and Christian White lead production, with James serving as lead director. They co-wrote alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón, with Anonymous Content producing.
- Balfe will also serve as executive producer, marking her television return after 'Outlander' concluded earlier this year. She is set to appear in the upcoming Apple film 'Tenzing'.
- Development began several years ago, with the project first reported in 2017 when Casey Affleck was originally attached. It stems from Alfonso Cuarón's overall deal with Apple Studios through his company Esperanto Filmoj.
