Sentencing for Herts teacher guilty of historic sexual abuse against boy
On Thursday, a court jailed former prep school teacher Deborah Franklin, 65, for seven years following her conviction for historic sexual abuse. His Honour Judge Choudhry sentenced her at St Albans Crown Court for eight counts of gross indecency.
Franklin subjected a young boy aged nine to 12 to "repeated sexual activity" while tutoring him privately in the 1990s. Prosecutors said Franklin "took the opportunities provided by her role and the trust placed in her" to abuse the victim.
Detective Constable Liz McGrath noted the probe was "challenging and complex" because the crimes occurred more than 30 years ago. The investigation relied on witness credibility after Franklin denied the allegations and claimed she barely remembered the complainant.
Beyond the prison term, the court issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, barring Franklin from working with children. The victim stated, "I hope this case leads to greater awareness that women can be perpetrators."
Cases involving abuse by those in positions of trust can have profound, life-long impacts on male victims, McGrath noted. She encouraged other victims to come forward, noting specialist support remains available regardless of when incidents occurred.
