Seven Dead Including Two Police Officers After Horror A66 Crash
Seven people, including two Cleveland Police officers and five members of the public, died early Saturday morning in a collision on the A66 in South Bank, Middlesbrough, when a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way struck a marked police vehicle at 3:39am on August 22, 2026.
Cleveland Police sighted a "suspicious vehicle" and a pursuit began before the Passat entered the A66, leading to the collision. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched a mandatory investigation into the circumstances.
North East Ambulance Service dispatched 14 units to the scene, including emergency crews, a specialist paramedic, a Hazardous Area Response Team, and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service. All occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.
"Words cannot describe the pain the Cleveland Police Family are feeling today," said Cleveland Police Federation Chair Lauren Somerville. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller added, "Our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in today's incident."
The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston as the investigation continues. Officials urged the public to "respectfully avoid speculation" during this ongoing inquiry.
