Watchdog Inquiry After Multiple Deaths in A66 Crash Following Police Pursuit
The watchdog said 14 ambulance resources responded as investigators review how a suspicious-vehicle pursuit ended in multiple deaths.
Seven people, including two police officers, died on Saturday after a collision involving a Cleveland Police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours.
The 3:39 AM crash followed a police pursuit of a suspicious vehicle, triggering a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for investigation.
Emergency responders deployed 14 units from the North East Ambulance Service, including a specialist paramedic and doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service, while the A66 closed between Normanby Road and Church Lane.
IOPC Director of Investigations Nicola Marfleet confirmed investigators have begun reviewing evidence at the scene, while Cleveland Police work to identify victims and notify their families.
