Latest Death Notice Published for Teen Killed in M9 Crash
On Friday, mourners gathered in Athy for the funeral of Joe Carthy, 15, one of five teenagers killed in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway last Sunday. Garda officers maintained a visible presence throughout the service amid concerns for public order.
Five teenagers died when their BMW, traveling over 120km/h, struck an oncoming vehicle near Junction 3 of the M9 on August 16. The crash claimed the lives of Jack Kennedy, 17, Alex McCarthy, 16, Jeremy O'Brien, 18, and Kamil Pustkowski, 17.
Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan promised to provide An Garda Siochana with "whatever resources they require" to combat dangerous driving. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly will implement new pursuit-specific training this year after the BMW previously failed to stop for police.
Following the crash, politicians criticized social media platforms for failing to restrict content that "glorifies illegal activity." TikTok declined an invitation to appear before the Oireachtas Media Committee, offering only a private briefing on its content management.
State agency Tusla confirmed one deceased teenager was in its care, while two others were "known" to the service. A community fundraiser has raised more than €640,000, with a vigil scheduled for Friday evening in Carlow for injured family members.
