YouTube To Cut Reach Of Channels Reposting Barely Changed Clips
The update targets channels that repost clips with little change and urges creators to add commentary, analysis or storytelling.
On October 2, YouTube announced it is updating its Shorts recommendation system to prioritize original content and reduce the reach of re-uploaded clips from other creators without significant additions.
The sheer volume of low-effort clips has prompted YouTube to prioritize original content in recommendations, addressing years of user frustration with repetitive Shorts feed content.
YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie clarified that creators must add "original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling" to maintain distribution; minor technical edits or template-based changes do not qualify.
Channels built primarily on reposted content will see reduced distribution within the YouTube Shorts feed, while creators clipping their own long-form videos remain unaffected by the algorithm change.
Internet retention strategist Mario Joos celebrated the update as "amazing" for addressing quality issues, though the change disrupts the robust clipping ecosystem that streamers and podcasters depend on for reach.
