With 500-plus structures damaged or lost, B.C.'s fire season is among the worst
Officials say more than 500 homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed as wildfires continue to spread across the province.
- Wildfires in British Columbia have destroyed or damaged more than 500 homes and structures this year, equaling some of the worst recent fire seasons in the province.
- THE BRADLEY COMPLEX destroyed about 230 homes on Okanagan Indian Band land on Aug. 1, while the Bald Range fire damaged or destroyed about 150 properties near Summerland and Faulder.
- Outside Clinton, THE BIG BAR COMPLEX The Thompson-Nicola Regional District destroyed structures on about 120 properties, while the BRUNSWICK COMPLEX The Fraser Valley Regional District near Boston Bar destroyed seven structures.
- An 80-year-old woman died while evacuating near Meadow Valley, the only known fatality; by comparison, 600 structures were destroyed in 2023 and 509 in 2017.
- Across British Columbia, more than 1,000 fires have burned 4,300 square kilometres this year, though structural losses have mounted despite the burned area remaining lower than 2023's record season.
