Walker Kessler Admits the Lakers' Defense Will Be Much Better than Expected
Kessler said the Lakers have added enough defensive talent to become a physical unit after finishing 20th in defensive rating last season.
On Tuesday, Los Angeles Lakers center Walker Kessler declared the team will be a "nasty defensive team" after the first day of training camp, arriving this offseason on a four-year, $130 million contract.
Coach JJ Redick prioritized defensive principles and physicality, aiming to improve a Lakers unit that ranked 20th in defensive rating last season by demanding disruption without gambling.
The 7-foot-2 Kessler serves as the back-line rim protector, allowing teammates to pressure the perimeter aggressively. Forward Jake LaRavia said this makes guards feel comfortable playing passing lanes without fear.
Despite the team's optimism, anonymous scouts told Sports Illustrated they expect the Lakers to struggle defensively due to limitations of stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
To bolster the rotation, the front office added defensive veterans like Kevon Looney and Matisse Thybulle. Kessler praised Looney for his "mind and positioning" and proven rebounding prowess.
