Wentz working in the background amid the QB competition
Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz accepts a limited role, focusing on leadership and backup duties as Kyler Murray is named the Vikings' starting signal-caller.
Following Kyler Murray's official designation as starter, the Vikings have increased backup quarterback Carson Wentz's practice reps to build chemistry with the reserve unit ahead of Saturday's exhibition opener against the New York Giants.
Wentz, who has played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, emphasized his improved playbook grasp this season, stating, "Now, I have a full grasp of the concepts." His veteran experience allows him to prepare without excessive reps.
During Thursday's walkthrough practice at TCO Performance Center, the Vikings mentally prepared for Saturday's exhibition opener; Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw likely will not suit up, though Will Fries returned after missing recent practices.
Kyler Murray is expected to play at least a series with the starters on Saturday, while McCarthy will likely see significant playing time, giving the team a chance to evaluate roster depth against the Giants.
Fringe roster players will have opportunities to make impressions during Saturday's game, with Myles Price and Demond Claiborne competing for kickoff return duties; Price currently holds the starting spot on the unofficial depth chart.
