Blake Brandel still adapting to role as starting center
Kevin O'Connell said the Vikings must clean up the center-quarterback exchange after Blake Brandel's errant shotgun snaps caused timing issues and turnovers.
Minnesota Vikings center Blake Brandel faces pressure to improve shotgun snap consistency during training camp. Inaccurate snaps have disrupted play timing for starting quarterback Kyler Murray, occasionally resulting in turnovers.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell emphasized the need for better center-quarterback exchanges, noting that Brandel's aggressive movement in the new running scheme might affect his accuracy. "That's something we're going to continue to harp on," O'Connell said.
During Wednesday's joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens at TCO Performance Center, the Vikings' offense struggled with timing and appeared a step behind the defense throughout both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
Despite earlier timing issues, Murray delivered a standout performance during situational drills, completing 3 of 3 pass attempts and throwing a roughly 35-yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy struggled early but connected with receiver Myles Price for a touchdown during situational drills. The Vikings' defense pressured Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson throughout 11-on-11 drills using schemes from Levi Drake Rodriguez and others.
