Study Pegs Median Net Wealth of Massachusetts Families at $370,000
The study cites homeownership and education as major drivers, while more than a third of Massachusetts families lack $400 for emergencies.
On Thursday, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston released the 2026 Massachusetts Economic Conditions and Household Opportunity Survey, revealing statewide median net wealth of $374,000 amid deep structural inequities across the commonwealth.
Stark racial wealth gaps define the findings, as white families hold median net wealth of $549,200, compared to just $7,800 for Black families and $1,200 for Latino families, reflecting centuries of discriminatory financial policies.
More than one-third of surveyed Massachusetts families cannot cover a $400 emergency expense; nearly 16% reported zero or negative net wealth where debts exceed assets.
Nicole Obi, president of the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, described this precarious state as "wealthlessness," noting that for many families, a simple car repair is an insurmountable barrier.
Barr Foundation CEO Ali Noorani stated that strengthening homeownership and educational outcomes is essential to "move toward an economy in which everyone has a chance to participate and contribute.
