New Kind of Waymo Arrives in Phoenix

Waymo says any riders can now book the Ojai model as it expands its purpose-built robotaxi service after limited pickups earlier this year.

  • On Thursday, Alphabet-owned Waymo opened its Ojai robotaxi service to all riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, shifting from limited early-access testing to full commercial operations.
  • To replace its aging Jaguar I-PACE fleet, Waymo designed the Ojai as a modular, purpose-built robotaxi using the Generation 6 platform, which reduces hardware costs to under $20,000 per vehicle.
  • Although manufactured by Zeekr in China, Waymo imports the vehicles stripped of connectivity hardware and installs its own sensor suite at a Mesa, Arizona facility, paying a tariff of roughly 127.5%.
  • Waymo currently operates about 300 Ojai robotaxis in its commercial fleet, with expansion plans to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year.
  • As the fleet expands, the company aims to reach 1 million weekly rides, positioning autonomous transportation as a mainstream mobility option while providing critical operational data.
