Vigilance Probe Ordered Into Mundamveli LIFE Mission Flats in Kochi
The inquiry will examine alleged construction flaws after residents reported leaks and structural damage in the 77-family complex.
On Wednesday, Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala ordered a VACB inquiry into alleged construction lapses at the Mundamveli apartment complex, a LIFE Mission project housing 77 families in Kochi.
Residents relocated from the flood-prone P&T Colony in 2024 have reported severe defects including leaking ceilings and sewage issues; allegations suggest the Greater Cochin Development Authority reduced the project budget from ₹20 crore to ₹14.5 crore.
An IIT Madras assessment submitted in February estimated rectification measures at ₹25 crore, far exceeding original construction costs. Chief Minister V D Satheesan recently noted defects are so extensive that demolition may be the only viable economic solution.
Welcoming the inquiry, Kochi MLA Mohammed Shiyas demanded that the Thrissur District Labour Contract Co-operative Society and responsible officials face criminal charges and repay public funds.
The VACB will examine planning decisions, cost reductions, and quality clearances issued by the GCDA, with named subjects including GCDA Superintending Engineer J B John and Society secretary Sindhu Subhash.
Kochi ∙ As the dispute over the flat complex built under the Life Mission project in Mundamveli intensifies, the Vigilance has been investigating the official lapse.
