Driver Jailed After Fatal Collision with Highways Worker
Vilius Domarkas admitted dangerous driving after hitting Anthony Howe in a roadworks closure, and a blood test showed he was three to four times over the limit.
- On Monday, September 28, Vilius Domarkas, 38, was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Lewes Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing the death of highways worker Anthony Howe, 65, by dangerous driving.
- Domarkas had been driving three to four times over the legal alcohol limit on July 8 when he veered into coned-off roadworks on the M23 near Crawley.
- Other drivers observed the van "zigzagging between lanes" before the collision. Domarkas had recently arrived from Lithuania via Stansted Airport and stopped 500m after impact.
- Lillian Bonney, the partner of the victim, said her "entire world was ripped apart" by his death. Domarkas was also disqualified from driving for 16 years and 8 months.
- Judge Martin Huseyin noted Domarkas must serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison and claimed he was "genuinely remorseful" due to marital breakdown. Drink-driving remains a "fatal five" cause of road deaths.
