Most Parents Support Their Grown Kids Financially, Survey Reveals: Here's How Much
The Census Bureau said 2.6 million parents gave voluntary financial help to 3.7 million adult children, with most supporting one child.
On Sept. 30, 2026, the U.S. Census Bureau released 2025 Survey of Income and Program Participation data showing approximately 2.6 million American parents provided $26.6 billion in financial support to 3.7 million adult children living outside their households in 2024.
A 2026 LendingTree survey of 2,000 U.S. consumers found that 71% of parents with children age 18 or older have provided financial assistance, as young adults struggle with the "basic math of everyday life" in today's expensive economy.
Everyday expenses accounted for most assistance, with parents providing a median of $4,725 annually in 2024; 53% helped pay for groceries or meals, while 35% contributed toward general living expenses.
Nearly two-thirds of parents providing support felt financially stressed, according to the LendingTree analysis; some reported decreased ability to cover everyday expenses , pay debts , build savings , or save for retirement .
LendingTree financial analyst Matthew Schulz noted that financial support has become "part of parenting an adult child," with 3 in 10 parents expecting to continue providing assistance indefinitely as young adults struggle for years to come.
