Obama is to appear with El-Sayed in Detroit as the ex-president gets more involved in the midterms
Obama’s appearance will bolster El-Sayed after a close primary and comes as he steps up ads, stops and fundraising for Democrats.
- Former President Barack Obama will campaign with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a Detroit rally on Oct. 24, an event that will also feature Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson.
- The visit follows a bruising Democratic primary where El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens by less than a percentage point and aims to consolidate party support against Republican Mike Rogers.
- Stevens outperformed El-Sayed in Wayne County, winning about 51% of the primary vote to his 45%; El-Sayed drew support from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders while Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer backed Stevens.
- Coinciding with the first day of Michigan's required early in-person voting period, the Oct. 24 rally is expected to provide a turnout boost for El-Sayed and other Democratic candidates in this election.
- Obama taped two dozen ads last week for Democratic candidates for governor and Senate, reflecting his broader midterm strategy as this open seat is among a handful expected to decide which party controls the majority next year.
