US Coast Guard joins Bahamas search for missing plane carrying 4 family members heading to Florida
Relatives and civilians recovered all four bodies after weather delayed the official search, and investigators have not determined what caused the crash.
- On Monday, a private PA-34 Piper aircraft carrying four people vanished while flying from the Bahamas to Florida. Authorities believe the plane went down about 13 miles west of Andros Island.
- Family members identified the passengers as pilot Mario Lamar, 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22. Lamar was an experienced pilot with more than 40 years of flying experience.
- The United States Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force launched a search operation, though inclement weather forced officials to temporarily suspend efforts on Monday. The Coast Guard deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane to assist local teams.
- "The Lamar and Sosa families are deeply grateful to everyone participating in the search and to those who have reached out with support," the family said in a statement. Officials continue to prioritize locating the missing aircraft and its occupants.
- The Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority is monitoring the situation following the loss of contact with the aircraft during its flight. While the search remains a priority, authorities have not confirmed the status of the four occupants.
