Aviation Expert Examines Deadly Amazon Air Cargo Plane Crash in Miami
Investigators recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders as they work to determine why the Boeing 767 overran the runway and killed five.
- On Sunday, an Amazon Air Boeing 767 overran the runway at Miami International Airport, striking two vehicles and killing five people. The cargo jet, operated by 21 Air LLC, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
- National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy confirmed the jet overran the runway by nearly 400 metres, tearing through a perimeter fence and striking a cleaning-services van and an SUV.
- Eyewitness Olvin Henriquez filmed the aftermath, capturing the pilot jumping from the cockpit as the plane burst into flames. "We saw the pilot jump out of the cockpit door and run for his life," Henriquez told ABC Miami.
- Investigators believe all five victims were inside the cleaning-services van. Amazon released a statement saying, "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss."
- Homendy led a team to the site on Monday, describing the scene as "utter devastation." Authorities have recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders for analysis to determine why the accident occurred.
