- Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng began preparatory talks in Washington on Saturday with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, ahead of the expected summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping.
- These negotiations follow President Trump signing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 on Friday, which imposes 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
- Despite the tariff tensions, Washington and Beijing are negotiating a reciprocal tariff reduction framework covering products worth $30 billion from each side, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson Huang Ling confirmed.
- Separately, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed high-level exchanges on Thursday; Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Beijing on Wednesday seeking diplomatic solutions.
- Xi is expected to arrive in Washington next week for the summit, where the leaders will aim to work towards "constructive strategic stability" following their recent agreement to enhance bilateral cooperation.
