Ukraine Hit by Power Cuts After Russian Strikes, Grid Operator Says
Ukrenergo said emergency cuts hit Kyiv and three nearby regions after the attack, which officials said killed seven people and damaged key facilities.
Wednesday's massive Russian missile and drone strike targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv, marking the largest combined assault on power facilities since the end of the last heating season.
Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi stated Moscow is "turning cold, darkness, and disruption of normal life into weapons" as winter approaches, escalating pressure on Ukrainian civilians ahead of the expected seasonal campaign.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles were launched, while the Air Force confirmed it downed 155 drones and 5 missiles during a 12-hour air-raid alert.
Seven people were killed in the attacks, and state grid operator Ukrenergo imposed emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three regions, urging consumers to limit usage.
Authorities are bolstering defenses and diversifying energy generation before winter, though human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported a critical shortage of urban shelters amid the civil-defense challenges.
