UK shop price inflation slows despite costs pressures, BRC says

Promotions and strong discounting helped offset higher costs, while food inflation eased to 2.5% and non-food inflation to 0.8%, BRC said.

  • On Tuesday, the British Retail Consortium reported that annual shop price inflation slowed to 1.4% in September, down from 1.5% in August, as retailers deployed widespread promotions to offset rising costs.
  • Competition between retailers intensified as they cut prices on food items to attract customers; Mike Watkins, head of retailer and business insight at NIQ, said promotions helped bring down meat and dairy prices.
  • Non-Food inflation softened to 0.8% from 0.9% driven by strong discounting on back-to-school essentials, while poor European harvests pushed up fruit prices and high commodity costs kept chocolate and confectionery elevated.
  • BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson called the situation a "fork in the road," urging the Chancellor to freeze business rates set to rise in April or risk pushing more costs onto consumers.
  • Britain's broader official consumer price inflation reached 3.1% in August and is expected to surpass 4% by early 2027, as policymakers warn the energy price shock from the Iran war may spread wider.
