UK media regulator investigates Pornhub over age checks
Ofcom said Aylo may not have tested Pornhub’s new age assurance enough before rollout, as it weighs penalties of up to £18 million.
- On Wednesday, Britain's media regulator Ofcom opened an investigation into Pornhub to determine whether the platform complied with legal duties under the Online Safety Act to prevent children from accessing adult content.
- Aylo, the service provider of Pornhub, announced in May it would rely on Apple's age-verification process, yet Ofcom remains "concerned that Aylo may not have conducted sufficient due diligence and testing before implementing its new age assurance process."
- George Lusty, Ofcom's Director of Enforcement, stated that "online age checks are a vital protection," and under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom can fine non-compliant companies up to £18 million or 10% of global turnover.
- Investigators will evaluate how Aylo implemented its age verification processes and whether it conducted the "necessary due diligence" before implementation, though Ofcom will not investigate how Apple operates its specific age checks.
- Ofcom has previously levied fines totaling more than £1 million against other adult content platforms for age check failures, establishing precedent as Aylo has not yet responded to requests for comment on the current probe.
